Nestled in the glorious heart of Cambridgeshire Fen countryside in the shadow of its magnificent Cathedral, Ely offers a wealth of attrcations that bely its stature as the second smallest city in England. Being small enough to explore on foot makes it a perfect choice for a summers day out in the British countryside.
Offering exhilerating views across the fens for miles around its Cathedral cuts an impressive silhouette against the skyline standing tall as one of Englands most beautiful and largest Cathedrals. Known as the "Ship of the Fens" the present buildings history can be traced as far back as 1083, although its origins can be traced as far back as AD 672 and contains the only Musuem dedicated to Stained Glass in England.
One of its most famous historical residents was "Lord Protector" of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and famed English Soldier and Politcal statesman, Oliver Cromwell. today, his family home is open to visit and has been recreated to demonstrate what a 17th century domestic life would have been like, along with displaying materials and exhibits on the English civil war which spawned his legacy.
