A border hopping river cruise as we visit Germany, France and Switzerland including pretty river side villages, famous wine routes, and beautiful romantic cities. Hear the legends and admire the cliff top castles as we cruise through the Middle Rhine Gorge, a sight not to be missed! We cruise all the way to Basel in Switzerland, where, in the middle of the Rhine, 3 countries meet. We have stops in surely the Rhine’s most beautiful towns and villages, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Strasbourg & Speyer and excursions to the romantic city of Heidleberg , the charming French town of Colmar and a journey along the Alsatian wine route.
Day 1 Belgium
We depart in the early morning for our journey to Dover and the ferry crossing to Calais.
On arrival in France we continue to our overnight hotel in Belgium and have an evening meal.
Day 2 The Rhine
After breakfast we depart our hotel and make our way to Mainz, on the Rhine, where we embark the MS Johann Strauss, our floating home for the next 6 days. Mainz is situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Main Rivers.
After settling into our cabins, the ship will leave Mainz in the evening and cruise downriver to Koblenz
Day 3 Koblenz – Rhine Gorge – Rüdesheim
This morning wake up in Koblenz! Another city situated where two rivers join; the Rhine and the Moselle. Our excursion shows us the picturesque walled Old Town before we re-join our ship and cruise upriver. Ensure your cameras are ready as we cruise through the Middle Rhine, the Rhine Gorge, where castles are all around on the high river sides and legends abound! We arrive the charming wine town of Rüdesheim where our walking tour shows us the famous street: The Drosselgasse.
Back on board our ship will cruise upstream during the night.
Day 4 Mannheim – Heidelberg
Wake up in Mannheim! From here, our coach excursion takes us to one of Germany’s most beautiful cities, Heidleberg, located on the River Neckar. We return to the ship in Mannheim and our next port of call is the Emperor’s City of Speyer where we have a walking tour to see the impressive Cathedral, the largest preserved Romanesque church in the World!
In the evening, our cruise continues upstream
Day 5 Strasbourg & the Alsatian Wine Route
Our ship arrives in Strasbourg this morning and we join our excursion of the Alsatian Wine route- one of the most picturesque routes in France, and of course, a taste of wine is included!
Returning to the ship for lunch, in the afternoon we explore lovely Strasbourg including the pretty ‘Petite France’ quarter.
Our ship continues cruising upstream this evening.
Day 6 Basel
Today we are in Switzerland and the pocket-sized metropolis of Basel. We see the beautiful old town on our walking tour as well as the red Town hall with its playful façade paintings, and the 1226 middle bridge over the Rhine. We have some free time is the Swiss city before our ship turns downstream and cruises towards Breisach
Day 7 Colmar
Our excursion today, from Breisach, takes us to the pretty town of Colmar with its half-timbered houses and crisscross of canals in the Little Venice district. Back on board for lunch we have a leisurely afternoon cruise downriver on the Upper Rhine.
Day 8 Mainz – Belgium
We wave farewell to our Captain and crew as we begin our return journey with an overnight stop in Belgium.
Day 9 Return Journey
We depart this morning and make our way to Calais and the ferry to Dover and onward journey to the Travel centre, arriving in the evening.
