Celebrating Progress: Rachel Slack Achieves Carbon Literacy Certification
At Roberts Travel Group, our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future continues to gather momentum. As part of our ongoing environmental strategy, we proudly introduced our first internal Green Team - a passionate group dedicated to driving positive sustainable change across every corner of our operation.
Today, we’re delighted to celebrate a key milestone from within that team.
A Big Step Forward: Rachel’s Carbon Literacy Success
Green Team member Rachel Slack has recently completed the Greener Futures – Carbon Literacy Training Course, an accredited programme recognised by the UK at COP21 and delivered through the national Carbon Literacy Project.
This training provides essential insight into the true cost of carbon, the impact it has on everyday decisions, and the actions organisations can take to meaningfully reduce their carbon footprint.
Rachel spent a full day immersed in tools, knowledge and practical guidance - learning how behavioural changes, operational decisions, and industry practices all play a role in shaping a greener future. She has already begun feeding these insights back into the business, strengthening the work of our Green Team and helping us embed more environmentally responsible thinking into daily operations.
Partnering for Change: About Greener Futures Leicestershire
The Greener Futures Leicestershire initiative - developed through the £2.56 million LCAN demonstrator funded by Innovate UK’s Net Zero Living Programme - aims to accelerate decarbonisation for SMEs across the county.
Through this programme, the Greener Futures team has been working alongside Roberts Travel Group to help shape a more sustainable operational framework. Their support has already enabled us to make steps in:
• Improving fleet efficiency
• Reducing waste and energy use
• Developing a robust sustainability strategy and policy
It’s been an incredibly valuable partnership-one that is helping us build a forward-thinking, responsible and greener operation.
In Conversation With Rachel
What motivated you to join the Green Team?
“I was asked to be part of the Sustainability Team at Roberts. As a business, we’re striving to become more sustainable, and I wanted to help drive that. I care about practical, measurable improvements, and this programme allows me to contribute to positive change while supporting the company’s long-term future. Sustainability isn’t only about the environment - it’s about improving the experience for passengers, drivers, and the wider community.”
What was your biggest takeaway from the Carbon Literacy training?
“I was aware of global warming, of course, but I was shocked at how much our everyday actions contribute to it - from driving to work to the consumables we buy. The training has made me much more aware of my daily choices and the impact they have.”
How will you apply this knowledge within the business?
“Roberts is already proactive - we’re proud to have electric vehicles and low-emission vehicles on the road. But we can go further. Whether it’s routing, vehicle performance, or driver behaviour, there are lots of opportunities to make long-term environmental improvements.”
Onwards and Forwards: Our Journey to a Greener Future
Embedding training like this into our team’s everyday thinking is a vital part of Roberts achieving its green mission. Real, meaningful change comes from people and our team is at the heart of driving that progress.
From investing in Leicestershire’s first electric coach, to overhauling our internal waste and recycling processes, we’ve already taken huge steps. But this is just the beginning. We’ll continue working hard, learning, adapting, and pioneering new approaches as we evolve into one of the region’s most environmentally conscious transport providers.
Rachel’s achievement plays an important part in that journey, and we’re excited to see how she continues applying her training to help us reach our sustainability goals.
Looking Ahead
We’re incredibly proud of Rachel’s dedication and delighted to congratulate her on achieving her Carbon Literacy Certification. Her commitment marks another positive step forward as Roberts Travel Group continues building a cleaner, greener and more responsible future.
Here’s to many more milestones like this - together, we’re driving change in the right direction.
